He joined Goodwill Houston after spending 27 years in prison. When he went to prison at the age of 24, he spent his time trying to stay on the right path and not let prison change him. Not wanting to mess up his chances, he took the opportunity to go back to school and earn his GED.

    In Mexico, Brenda had a good job as a Production Analyst working for a major logistics company. She fled to the United States and applied for asylum because of the violence in Mexico. In the United States, Brenda struggled to find work. She didn’t speak English and had only $25 in her pocket, but sold tamales door-to-door and worked at shopping mall kiosks to get by. It was a tough time in her life. After a family tragedy, she needed to stay busy and wanted to find meaningful work.

    Jacobi grew up in a home filled with love. He did well in school and excelled in sports—so much so that he earned a college football scholarship. His days on the football field, however, were short-lived. After he began smoking marijuana, he dropped out of college and moved home. Jacobi calls that time in his life his “biggest regret.” One day a friend introduced him to cocaine, which led to meth and pills. As a result, he fell into a horrible addiction that would last for the next 15 years.
