Pernell Lamons is the Dock Lead at Goodwill Houston's Greenpoint Outlet Location. His peers described him as hard-working, reliable, and always there to lend a helping hand. He joined Goodwill Houston after spending 27 years in prison. When he went to prison at the age of 24, he spent his time trying to stay on the right path and not let prison change him. Not wanting to mess up his chances, he took the opportunity to go back to school and earn his GED.

In Mexico, Brenda had a good job as a Production Analyst working for a major logistics company. She fled to the United States and applied for asylum because of the violence in Mexico. In the United States, Brenda struggled to find work. She didn’t speak English and had only $25 in her pocket, but sold tamales door-to-door and worked at shopping mall kiosks to get by. It was a tough time in her life. After a family tragedy, she needed to stay busy and wanted to find meaningful work.

Jacobi grew up in a home filled with love. He did well in school and excelled in sports—so much so that he earned a college football scholarship. His days on the football field, however, were short-lived. After he began smoking marijuana, he dropped out of college and moved home. Jacobi calls that time in his life his “biggest regret.” One day a friend introduced him to cocaine, which led to meth and pills. As a result, he fell into a horrible addiction that would last for the next 15 years.

Ever since she was 16 years old, Angela has been employed. It was an accomplishment that she was always proud of, but in 2019 her life changed forever. She was rushed to the hospital after her doctor discovered that her IUD had traveled inside her body and was causing a dangerous blood infection. She spent three months fighting the infection before she was released from the hospital to go home.

During the month of November, Goodwill Houston focuses on its veterans. Today we are featuring Gary, an Army veteran who started using drugs after he left the service. He was addicted to crack-cocaine and turned to crime. In 1990, he was convicted of three armed robberies. Initially, Gary was offered a lesser sentence, but refused to testify against his friends. As a result, he was handed the maximum sentence on all three counts – 99 years in prison plus two life sentences.
