He didn’t aim for the structure to be grand but instead constructed a simple canoe cabin on the property facing Swede Bay, adding on little “bedroom cabins” and recreational structures throughout the property for overnight guests.

Homeowners Jessica and Martin Kristiseter wanted a vacation home within easy driving distance from their primary home in Denver. Their search led them to a traditional log home located on a golf course in the Cordillera Valley Club, near Edwards, Colorado, with views of the golf course and several mountain ranges. Designer Kay Genua has a deep appreciation for antiques. She even spent her college graduation money on antique furniture. “I still work at that desk in my office,” she says. A past job in sales and design at a home furnishings and antiques store was a natural fit for her interests. As she began to collaborate more with homeowners who shopped in the store, they started asking her for additional design services. It gave her the courage to strike out on her own as an independent designer 21 years ago.

Most people bring their Pinterest photos and magazine cutouts to a meeting with the architect and designer when they are ready to build a home. But for Lori and Patrick Dempsey, the chance to build a home in the small mountain town of Truckee, California, was an opportunity to get their hands dirty.
