Scotty Cornish lives in the French Alps and spends his spare time cycling, trail running and ski touring. He recently completed the 621-mile (1,000km) Alps Divide, a challenging bikepacking race. “I was quite a reclusive kid, just making models and painting them, until I got into biking,” he says. “After my A levels I took myself off across France for a couple of weeks, with a line drawn on a paper map that took me deep into the Alps.

I’ve visited Iceland on numerous occasions. The first time was back in 2011, for a week of solo travel along the southern coast. In the tiny village of Eyrarbakki I stared out at the churning ocean - a sign nearby read “Next Stop: South Pole 10,632 Miles”. I marvelled at the surreal beauty of icebergs on the black shores of Diamond Beach.

March is a month of contrasts.
