1. IntroductionThe decarbonisation of the building sector is a significant challenge that Europe faces, and the large-scale adoption of nearly zero-energy buildings (nZEBs) is seen as one solution. The recast Energy Performance of Buildings Directive EPBD 2010/31/EU required all buildings to become nZEBs by the end of 2020. However, to attain climate neutrality in Europe by 2050, additional commitments beyond the nZEBs level are required.
