It has been thirteen years since the 2011 Revolution in Egypt toppled Hosni Mubarak. He had been at that point the president of Egypt for thirty years. A recent article, that in part recounted the revolution, spurred me to write what follows, which is in part a critique of the accounts of events in Egypt propagated in US media at that time, but also an account of my experiences in Cairo during and after those events.

In striking at the Iranian consulate in Damascus on April 1 Bibi Netanyahu has made himself an April Fool. Israel has been bombing Syria for years with no provocation or retaliation by Syria. For years it has bombed its airports which disrupted humanitarian aid to Syria’s civilian population who were suffering in its long civil war.

That coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the US mass media is distorted by a bias in favor of Israel is hardly news to people more or less in command of their faculties. But events since October 7 have brought to light examples that go well beyond the usual daily distortions to outright lying—lies that rival those of the WMD fabrications used to justify the US invasion of Iraq.

Until October 7 events in Gaza for the past nine years rarely made the headlines even in Israel. Some event would make Hamas fire some missiles into Israel and Israeli jets would respond by dropping bombs many times more destructive on ‘select military sites’ in Gaza. All of this was regarded as so unremarkable that the Israeli military referred to it as, “mowing the lawn.” Israel’s allies, The US, Britain, France and Germany also took little notice of these events.

To believe the mass media America is in a malaise. Well, some Americans are. But for Trump and the MAGA crowd rage would be a better word. Call it malaise—or for some raging malaise—a general sense of dissatisfaction finds some confirmation in public opinion polls. A significant number of people use terms like ‘dissatisfied’ or ‘unhappy’ to describe how they feel about life in America now. This is perhaps not surprising given the financial crash of 2008, the Covid pandemic and climate change.

More than two centuries after his death the works of the Marquis de Sade can still shock. This is itself somewhat surprising since our culture is saturated by sex and violence and the crimes of Jeffrey Epstein are still making the news. While Sade lived he was a man reviled for both his crimes and his writings. Without question some of his crimes merited revulsion and imprisonment then and now.
