William McChesney Martin, Jr., the Chairman of the Federal Reserve from 1951 – 1970, famously quipped that a common role of the Federal Reserve is to take away “the punch bowl …just when the party was really warming up.” Removing the punch bowl may not be a popular choice. But both theory and evidence show the advantages of having a central bank that has a reputation for not bowing to political pressure. Good reputations are hard to establish and easy to destroy.

Sanctions should never be judged in isolation; policymakers often opt for economic sanctions not because they will always work but rather because they are viewed as superior to military statecraft or diplomatic censure. For political reasons, then, it seems likely that the use of sanctions will continue to rise – as will all the negative externalities that they create. · Williams College Consumer prices rose 3.7% from August 2022 to August 2023. While inflation still exceeds pre-pandemic levels and the Federal Reserve’s two percent target, it has fallen dramatically from its June 2022 peak of 8.9 percent on a year-over-year basis, the steepest drop on record that has not been associated with a recession. The rapid deceleration contradicts the predictions of those who believed that a rise in unemployment would be necessary to reduce inflation.
