On Anzac Day 2024, my Aunt Deborah messaged to say a UK based researcher had contacted her suggesting that William Bleakley, my great-great-grandfather, was one of three founders of a company called British Electric Vehicles in 1916. That side of our family’s history had been largely lost so I was very curious to learn more. My Aunt connected me to the researcher who sent a treasure trove of documents and photos piecing together the incredible life of William Bleakley Senior.

A new report from Monash University’s Climateworks Centre shows that unless Australia sees a “rapid” ZEV (zero emission vehicle) uptake of 72 per cent of all new vehicle sales by 2030, including light vehicles and trucks, the transport sector will fail to contribute its share of emissions reduction. But the report also notes that focusing on EV uptake alone will not be sufficient, and that governments will need to think differently and creatively about transport solutions.

Mitsubishi Motors Australia has used its 2024 dealer conference to outline its future product strategy, one that it says will focus on “electrified powertrains” and will see “multiple electrified solutions by 2030.”But it’s vague about battery electric cars. Like other Japanese car makers, the focus is on hybrid technologies, and still burning fossil fuels,“Australia is a core market for MMC, and it makes an important contribution to our global business,” says Mitsubishi Australia.
