After all, many of the factors that develop personal attributes such as depth of knowledge, skills, and education—components of what economists call “human capital”—are concentrated at the local level. Quality neighborhood schools, strong peer groups, and public safety are a few examples. Greater human capital translates into more labor productivity and higher individual earnings in the future.

    The COVID-19 pandemic saw a marked surge of e-commerce and online grocery delivery services that persisted past lockdown conditions. The latest work by Carnegie Mellon University College of Engineering researchers examined the impacts of grocery delivery on energy use, emissions and traffic congestion, and whether there might be a better way to manage and optimize deliveries. The study found that grocery delivery was less energy efficient than people shopping for themselves.
