Disclaimer: This is a work of fiction. All characters and events are products of the author’s imagination. Any resemblance to actual events or persons, living or dead, is almost entirely coincidental. My name is Jeremiah Cleveland. I am writing this letter from a dusty mountaintop in Santa Monica. Today is Dec. 27, 2052. Cracked, blackened earth now takes the place of Los Angeles, a memory carried by a quivering breeze. I fear I may be responsible for this tragedy. This is my confession.

I like the quiet. When the stillness is so great, you feel it in the air and you can breathe it in. When the silence is pounding on your ears, and you can hear blood rushing through them with every heartbeat. Imagine my dismay, then, when I step out of my apartment and my building is playing anonymous 2010s hits in the hallways and elevators. I’m then made to hear throwbacks from other decades as I’m trying to have my lunch in the establishment of the day.

I never thought starting a backyard garden would send me into a philosophical doom spiral. It was an act that had me questioning the very tenets upon which I founded a large part of whom I wanted to become. Yet here I am. For years now, my backyard has been an eroded badland birthed of sloth and neglect. The Dust Bowl would blush at its sight.

Architecture is a profession in crisis. It’s revered as this great influence on our built environment, a profession that designs how we live and work. We defer to these supposed geniuses, but the truth is, we don’t actually need them. One statistic makes that clear: According to Arch Daily, only 2% of homes in the United States are designed by architects. When it comes to it, people just don’t seem to find the extra cost worthwhile.

The new buildingsAs we are all almost painfully aware, USC is hell-bent on pushing its sustainability prerogative. Banners celebrating Earth Month are plastered across Trousdale Parkway, and we are constantly reminded of the various waste-reducing and water-saving measures implemented throughout campus. Every available square inch is seemingly dedicated to the advertisement of sustainability. The greatest billboards, however, have to be the newest buildings on campus.

Another rainy weekend has passed. At least for you, dear reader. At the time of writing, I am unfortunately stuck in the shoe-sogging wetland that is Los Angeles after a light downpour. It seems as though L.A.’s infrastructure is entirely reliant on evaporation — Angeleños give great purchase to the curative powers of their ever-present sun. And, like clockwork, your friends from the East Coast will make a point to remind you that this doesn’t happen over there.

The blooms have come. It’s that time of year, folks, and it’s not just love that’s in the air, as putrid tangs disseminate throughout USC Village to the nauseated chagrin of many students. One wonders where this smell could come from — and no, it’s not because it’s Valentine’s Day, though the serendipity is not lost on me. It’s from the Callery pear — Pyrus calleryana — a plant that managed to impregnate the urban forests of the United States and one whose abortion has been long overdue.

Often, architects will obscure their true intentions behind thin walls of illusory prose. These walls let architects do as they please while still hiding what it is that actually pleases them. USC alum Frank Gehry has been creating junkyard hodgepodges since the ’70s, but when you ask him for his thinking behind each facade, his response will vary from building to building.
