    1 IntroductionAs of 2017, there were an estimated 2,500 fishery observers working worldwide (Ewell et al., 2020). Fishery observers are professionally trained biologists tasked by national agencies with monitoring commercial catch of marine species. They work alongside fishing vessel crews at sea for hours to months at a time, collecting data critical to fishery management and ecosystem modeling (Gilman et al., 2017; Ewell et al., 2020).
