The Boonsboro boys and girls lacrosse teams will open the MPSSAA state playoffs as No. 1 seeds in Class 1A West Region II. The MPSSAA released the playoff brackets Monday afternoon. Boonsboro's boys (8-3) have a quarterfinal bye. No. 4 Smithsburg (7-4) will host No. 5 Brunswick in a quarterfinal Wednesday, with the Warriors hosting the winner on Friday. The Leopards have won six straight region titles. Boonsboro defeated Smithsburg 16-8 early this season.

North Hagerstown and South Hagerstown athletes earned top-eight finishes in multiple events. Kamryn Fleming, 9, of Hagerstown, a fourth-grader at Paramount Elementary, competed in the Elks Hoop Shoot national finals in Chicago. Fleming advanced through school, county, district, state and regional competitions to reach the national finals. She tied for sixth place in the 8-9 girls division at nationals, making 18 of 25 free throws. Kamryn enjoyed the experience, saying she “felt like a celebrity for a few days.”At the tender age of 9, Kamryn Fleming already has bragging rights on mom.
