Forty-eight years ago, Archbishop Janani Luwum was reportedly assassinated on the orders of the former President Iddi Amin Dada. Luwum was at the time the leader of the Church of Uganda. But his legacy lives on after Uganda declared the 16 of February a public holiday to celebrate the life of Luwum. DANIEL KIBET brings us the tales from the Northern Uganda Diocese of the Anglican Church, where Luwum once served as the bishop, and how people there remember him.

Preparations for the Church of Uganda to host this year’s Martyrs Day celebrations are nearly complete. The Northern Uganda cluster of the Church of Uganda is leading this important religious event, set to take place at the Anglican Martyrs site in Namugongo, Wakiso District, on Tuesday, 3rd June. The cluster is made up of six dioceses. Each diocese was assigned specific tasks to ensure the success of the event.

They were evicted by the Ugandan government in their cradle land in Mt. Elgon forest in Sebei Sub-region in eastern Uganda after it was gazetted as a national park, nearly three decades ago.

The government has once again extended the term of office for local council one (LC1) and two (LC2) chairpersons by six months, starting from July 4, 2024. This decision marks the third postponement of elections for these positions, initially scheduled last year and again earlier this year. State Minister for Information, Geoffrey Kabbyanga, while speaking to NTV, cited logistical challenges as the reason for the extension, without providing further details.
