The answer is the 1770s, when the adjective “liberal” became the name of the policy orientation against government restriction, government monopoly, and protectionism, and in favor of individual liberty, premised by a stable, functional system of governmental authority.

I had the honor of being a guest on “Amazing Academics,” a YouTube series hosted by Philip Davies, who is retired from Bournemouth University in southeast England. Dr. Davies’ prior guests include Frank Furedi, Norman Fenton, Judith Curry, and Eric Kaufmann. Although I was invited to speak on ‘misinformation’ and ‘hate’ as the censorship stratagems, I asked Dr. Davies whether I might first zoom out, and he agreed.

I was recently watching the video “Are Populists Destroying Democracy?” on the IEA’s YouTube channel, in which the IEA’s Editorial Director Kristian Niemietz interviewed Swedish political scientist Nils Karlson about his much-discussed book Reviving Classical Liberalism Against Populism (2024). Apart from its treatment of populism, Karlson’s book is very good, particularly in probing the question: can classical liberalism be sustained if it does not answer people’s search for meaning?

The book The Coddling of the American Mind, by Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt, appeared in 2018. It explained trends that have remade much of American life, like safetyism, cancel culture, and identity politics. It reached number eight on the New York Times bestseller list. The book has been made into a movie, which appeared in theaters earlier this year to strong reviews.

Some things signal untruthfulness. One sign of untruthfulness is, of course, the uttering of untrue statements. Sometimes you know about the matter in question, and the statement disagrees with your understanding. You then suspect the speaker is untruthful. But, putting that aside: What are the leading signs of untruthfulness in a speaker? After all, often we do not know about the matter well enough to judge whether the speaker’s statements are true.

In the Vice-Presidential debate, the Democratic candidate Tim Walz used shouting fire in a crowded theater to justify limitations on free speech. Ironically, he resembles a man shouting fire in a crowded theater. The history of this phrase traces to Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. in the 1919 Supreme Court case Schenck v. United States, in which he says it is wrong to “falsely” shout fire. The case concerned the right to protest war. Schenck was later largely overturned. Still, the phrase has stuck.
