If there’s one word to describe how I feel about my time at The Jersey Journal, it’s grateful. I’m grateful for having gotten the job, grateful for the education I received there, grateful for the opportunity to work with the people there, all of them consummate professionals, and grateful to serve the people of Hudson County. There were three periods in my career at the JJ.

They are prisoners of memory locked behind a fence, looking out at those whose names and faces are remembered, for the time being, at least. For the past several months, I have passed them twice daily, on my way to work and on my way home, seeing their faces peer out from their two-dimensional prison on Newark Avenue near Division Street. The faces are on posters pasted onto the cement columns holding up the New Jersey Turnpike Extension.

With the holidays rolling right up to greet us, I bring you the final Tracing Our Roots Genealogy Holiday Gift Guide as The Jersey Journal plans to cease publication on Feb. 1. I’ve been happy to share these ideas for genealogy-themed gifts for the past 15 years, but as they say, all good things must come to an end. I occasionally offer some ideas that aren’t strictly genealogy but more in the productivity category, like my first suggestion: A Day-Timer planner. What’s that, you say? A paper planner?

All roads lead back to Bergen, at least as far as Hudson County goes. Bergen was the first incorporated place in the colony of New Jersey. Where the name came from is uncertain. One possibility is that it comes from the German word Bergen, which means “hills” and refers to the Palisades, the cliff formation that runs along much of the length of Hudson County.
