Batman/Superman: World’s Finest, written by prolific comic writer Mark Waid, with artwork from the similarly prolific Dan Mora, debuted in 2022, and has built up a sizeable fanbase since. Taking place in DC’s past, it’s meant to tell canonical stories that don’t overlap with the brand’s current plotlines, while harkening back to the Silver Age of comics. This review covers the first five trade paperbacks. So, what’s the verdict? On the whole, it’s quite positive.

Let’s get the formalities out of the way: yes, Aquaman has long been considered one of the also-rans of the superhero world: he doesn’t have an obvious classic storyline like, say, The Long Halloween, his costume is orange, and he “talks to fish” (it’s actually a telepathic connection, thank you very much).

Speaking as Before We Go Blog’s self-appointed Special Thorrespondent, I find myself a little disappointed with The Immortal Thor volume three, The End of All Songs (written by Al Ewing, with artwork by Valentina Pinti and Jan Bazaldua, and cover art by Alex Ross): an already-slim volume split into two storylines, it’s hard to shake the conclusion that some momentum from the first two volumes was lost.

With apologies to my childhood stalwart Batman, Thor is my favorite superhero. Sure, there’s no shortage of cool superheroes out there, but how many of them gallop across the sky in a chariot pulled by goats? There are simply so many influences his stories can be pulled from, and so many directions they can take: urban fantasy, epic fantasy, sword and sorcery, historical fiction, myth, space opera, family drama, fish-out-of-water comedy, and of course, traditional superheroics.

As our team caught up with all of our semi-finalists, it became clear that two books rose to our favourites. Cold West by Clayton Snyder and Petition by Delilah Waan Feedback rolled in on how memorable, but how vastly different, each book is. Luke Winch summed it up beautifully:Hoookay. I have mulled this over in my head and here it is. Both authors display an awesome skill at writing, both books have a unique voice that makes it stand shoulders above the rest. In that respect, i can’t split them.
