Standing on the 64th-floor balcony of Lebua’s Sky Bar, the scene feels eerily familiar, even to a first-time visitor. The panoramic views of Bangkok‘s winding Chao Phraya River and glittering cityscape served as the backdrop for The Hangover Part II, cementing this hotel in pop culture history. But Lebua has crafted something far more enduring than its Hollywood moment. Some people may come for the “Hangover experience,” but they leave talking about Lebua’s staff and restaurants instead.

Marlborough put New Zealand on the global wine map with Sauvignon Blanc, but visiting isn’t as straightforward as other nearby wine regions. It lacks the tourism infrastructure of popular areas like Hawke’s Bay, Waiheke Island or Central Otago. And without the obvious wine tasting routes and high-profile luxury estates you might find in Napa or Burgundy, knowing where to go takes some planning.

Laos is not an easy country to get to. Even from New York. My journey required the longest operating flight via Singapore Air, a full 18 hours, landing in Singapore, then a connecting flight to Bangkok. It’s 4:58 p.m. at The Squeezebox in San Antonio, and the party is already in full swing. Accordions, synths, and gritos blast from a Bluetooth boombox. The playlist, which runs deep with Tejano classics by Flaco Jiménez, Gary Hobbs, and Emilio Navaira, has infiltrated the room, inspiring a large group to dance cumbia before the sun has even considered its descent. It might be a Sunday, but few are thinking about work tomorrow.
