The Multiple Sclerosis Journal (MSJ) had its first issue in April 1995. Hence, it will turn thirty next April and, by human standards, will enter young adulthood. Without any risk of overstatement, MSJ will do so in very good health thanks to its previous editorial teams, led over these 30 years by Thompson,1 Silberberg2 and Allen.3 No doubt, being called to lead MSJ into its fourth decade of existence is a huge challenge and a great responsibility.

In the last 30 years, no subspecialty in neurology has seen greater advancements in treatment than multiple sclerosis (MS). With more than 20 disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) approved and more in the pipeline, we are now able to essentially freeze the disease in its course and reduce disability progression, when treatment is started early.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) has traditionally been viewed as predominantly affecting White people from North America or Europe.1 Indeed, a significant proportion of research involving people with MS has been based in Europe or North America. As a result, the epidemiology of MS is heavily influenced by how MS presents in White populations from these regions. Inaccurate inferences have been made that race is a decisive variable in who gets MS.
