Okay, it turns from gel to foam before your very eyes, but shaving cream—any shaving cream—is literally the opposite of edgy. Its sole purpose is to blunt the effects of an edge.

Along its length are a garden-supply center, a crematorium, an RV dealer, a KFC—the typical trappings of life . . . and death. The pavement is a bit crowned and rutted, and it’s only a smidge more than 40 feet wide. The road is designated D338.

They always open with a single piano note, hanging alone in the air. In the highly dramatic video I’ve just watched, that piano note is a plaintive C6, which hovers over the mist-shrouded forest of the Nürburgring Nordschleife. I’m referring to the 14-minute mini-epic Ford Motor Company produced about the Mustang GTD’s lap of the Ring. The single note is a setup. You know a blast of serious action is coming.

Pity the folks at Mercedes-AMG. They had a lot to live up to. The C63, the company's long-running hot-rodded small sedan, had made a hell of an impression on car enthusiasts for more than a decade. The core of the C63, and more broadly of the entire AMG lineup, was its burbling and blaring V-8 engines. They were raucous and unapologetic. The C63s were ostensibly sport-sedan competitors with BMW M3s over the years but were actually quite different in character, being brawnier and less high-strung.

In 1951, this magazine’s office was a tiny, dingy room in Glendale, California, with a bare-bulb light fixture hanging from the ceiling by its wires, an open wall cavity for a coat closet, and mountains of paper everywhere that threatened to topple onto the floor. It did have a well-stocked paper-cup dispenser mounted to the wall, though. This story originally appeared in Volume 26 of Road & Track. This was categorically not big-time publishing. From the start, the magazine was a passion project.

Photograph courtesy of NASAIt hasn’t had quite the impact of GPS or the atomic bomb, but in the pantheon of items created by U.S. government researchers, the NACA duct must be considered one of the most enduring. This story originally appeared in Volume 25 of Road & Track. After all, the duct, or “submerged inlet,” was developed by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA, the predecessor to NASA) in the Forties and has changed not one bit since.
