JOSEPH — Alpenfest began in the 1970s, when a group of immigrants wanted to celebrate Swiss-German heritage in Wallowa County. Today, nearly a half-century later, the tradition continues with music and dance, German food and German beer. Alpenfest will be held Sept. 26-29 in Enterprise and Joseph. This year includes a special dedication to Josef "Joe" Ehrler, a founder of Alpenfest, who died last year.

An August 4 deadline is fast approaching for comments to the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) that was issued June 21. The NPRM will restrict, for national security purposes, specific types of outbound U.S. investments involving certain technologies and products in countries of concern (currently, the People’s Republic of China (PRC), along with the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong and the Special Administrative Region of Macau).

ENTERPRISE —In 2010, Stacy Green, who owns her own company, Stacy Green Marketing, was looking for a way to teach teens how to open and maintain a business. She found examples across the country, but looking across the county, she didn’t see one. So, with the help of Building Healthy Families, she created one. Green's plan was to match Wallowa County students with entrepreneurs who had started their own successful businesses and have those students learn from them.

JOSEPH — Joseph Charter School is getting a $2.4 million seismic upgrade this summer. Work on the project, intended to reinforce walls and the school’s roof, started June 3, the Monday after the school year ended. The goal is to have the project completed by August or September, before students return in the fall.
