1 Introduction Maternal overweight or having a body mass index (BMI) greater than or equal to 25 kg/m2 before pregnancy or early pregnancy is associated with higher rates of adverse perinatal outcomes, including gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and large for gestational age (LGA) babies [1]. GDM, defined as diabetes occurring during pregnancy in women without pre-existing diabetes and LGA (birthweight > 90th centile) both have short- and long-term health implications [1].
