For the final comic commissioned by Greenpeace, I pitched an idea of updating the New Zealand Coat of Arms to better reflect the priorities of our government if the Regulatory Standards Bill were to pass, and to be honest, for trying to force it through in the first place. The Coat of Arms is intended to represent our country as a bicultural nation and our relationship between the Crown and Māori, in addition to our agricultural exports.

It’s been a hectic three days for me. I returned from a two-month tour on Sunday and have had to dive right into some exciting, but time-sensitive work, as Greenpeace commissioned me to make a few comics on the Regulatory Standards Bill. I sent them a few pitches for ideas, and after a bit of back-and-forth, I finished three different comics on topics surrounding why this bill is bad. I’ll share them on here and my socials as they slowly get released.

So, rents are falling in Wellington. Landlords are struggling to fill houses at their current prices, and a lack of demand is resulting in prices falling, from what I hear from friends who rent in the city. I’m sure National will tout this as a win for them, but the reason they are falling is that people are leaving the city in droves due to the cuts made by this government and leaving to head overseas for better opportunities and get better compensation for their skill set.

It would be disingenuous to say that I’m shocked by the 2025 budget announcement. For the past two and a half years, we have seen this government hack and slash the public sector, purposefully target low-income workers, and actively start a campaign to privatise our healthcare and education systems while simultaneously pleasing their donors and justifying a landlord tax during a cost-of-living crisis.

To actively reflect this government’s approach to animal conservation, which most recently included the amendment to the Wildlife Act, which allows the Director-General of Conservation to permit companies to kill native animals if they get in the way of projects like roads, mines, or dams, we will also be making amendments to ‘Bird of the Year’ to better align with our current model.

This cartoon is a homage to the famous World War II Poster that was created to boost female worker morale, and was later re-appropriated to promote feminism, especially women's rights in the workforce. I decided it was fitting to put Brooke van Velden in a dark dystopian version of this iconic poster, after she reversed New Zealand’s pay equity movement in one fell swoop.

Last week, we got an all-around clear example of what Christopher Luxon spinlessly called “A Winston way of communicating”. Winston Peters sped-ran through his current modus operandi for staying in the limelight: Say/introduce something utterly offensive that serves no real purpose aside from dog whistling to cookers, throwing a minority group under the bus, and upsetting “woke lefty shills”. Directly contradict past things he has said/legislation party has passed.
