    (RNS) — When Jimmy Carter ran for president, his campaign advisers worried his Christian faith would be a political liability. On a draft copy of the speech announcing his presidential candidacy, they urged him to soften his claim to being a Christian to avoid offending those who did not identify with his brand of religion. By leading with a reference to his religion, Carter was coming across “a little too much as ‘Old South,’” one adviser told him. Carter insisted on keeping the phrase.

    I’m not expecting the presidential election to be decided tonight. If the election turns out to be as close as the polls predict, we’ll need to await late returns from several swing states that will not be finalized today. It will also likely take days (if not weeks) for control of the House to be figured out. Even control of the Senate probably will not be determined before midnight tonight.

    Our partisan differences are about identity, not policyFor months, the two presidential candidates have been neck-and-neck in the polls. The differences in the electorate go beyond polarization over Donald Trump, though, because polls for congressional candidates show a similar phenomenon. Both houses of Congress will likely be nearly evenly divided after this election. If there has been one constant in this tumultuous campaign, it is that there are very few persuadable swing voters.

    This week, when the New York Times republished a short quiz to help readers identify which of six political “parties” they might belong to, one ideology was conspicuously missing. The quiz assumes that America’s two major parties are really coalitions rather than cohesive parties – an assumption that was probably truer a decade ago than it is today – and then asks a few questions to help readers figure out which of those smaller political parties they would naturally belong to.

    AbstractThe geographic variation of Perognathus apache Merriam in New Mexico was investigated to determine the relationship of P. apache to P. flavescens Merriam and the relationships of the subspecies of P. apache to each other. Skin and skull measurements of adult specimens were analyzed statistically. Relative color values for adult specimens were estimated by selecting two individuals as color standards and comparing the other specimens with the standards.
