J.K. Rowling brought magic to multiple generations with her wizarding world—and it’s made her a billionaire, again, despite plenty of recent controversy. The Harry Potter author is now worth $1.2 billion, according to Forbes estimates, after previously falling off the Billionaires List in 2012 as a result of charitable giving. That’s in spite of the fact that Rowling has placed herself at the center of a culture war, frequently posting anti-transgender rhetoric on social media.

The original driver of the meme stock frenzy is getting in on bitcoin. GameStop disclosed it had purchased $513 million worth of the cryptocurrency, though it’s not clear why, and its stock closed Wednesday down more than 10%. The company’s CEO Ryan Cohen previously met with another firm known for being the largest corporate holder of bitcoin, fueling speculation about a possible bitcoin reserve.

A small group of startups like OpenAI, Stripe and SpaceX are commanding massive valuations this year, helping their earliest backers rise in the ranks of Forbes’ Midas List. The 24th annual ranking of the world’s top venture capitalists, out today, is once again topped by Sequoia investor Alfred Lin. Lin, who made early bets on Airbnb and DoorDash, also benefits from a 2021 investment in OpenAI at a $14 billion valuation (the ChatGPT-maker is currently worth $300 billion).
