SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — California Attorney General Rob Bonta has opened a probe into San Diego County’s juvenile detention system, investigating whether or not the facilities engaged in mistreatment of the youth in its care. The civil rights investigation, which was announced by the attorney general’s office Tuesday, specifically will look into the East Mesa Juvenile Detention Facility in Otay Mesa and Youth Transition Campus in Kearny Mesa.

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — As part of the proposed cuts to San Diego’s budget to close a more than $258 million deficit, the City Clerk’s Office is proposing discontinuing a program focusing on digitizing the city’s archives for free public access online. Called the Archives Access and Preservation Program, the city began the initiative more than a decade ago as a way to make its historical artifacts and records easier to view.

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A truck erupted in flames on State Route 52 in Santee early Monday morning, leading to brief lane closures on the highway. The car fire was first reported around 5:50 a.m. According to California Highway Patrol logs, the flames appeared to originate near the back of the truck’s bed. The driver of the vehicle then pulled over to the right-hand shoulder of the road, where CHP says flames began to spread into nearby brush.

On Saturday, the county was poised to be almost 25 degrees above average recorded on the date in years past, with some parts hitting record-breaking temperatures. Much of East County was approaching — or had already surpassed — triple digits as of 1 p.m., according to the National Weather Service, setting the ceiling for the hottest temperatures seen this year so far.
