On the evening of May 25, 2020, George Floyd was murdered by police outside a grocery store in Minneapolis. From the outset, the incident became a battle of narratives. The local police initially reported Floyd was experiencing “distress” and died from a medical incident. A day later, bystander Darnella Frazier uploaded a video that showed the graphic details, including the police’s excessive use of force leading up to Floyd’s death.

Michigan’s swing-state status means people are talking about Detroit. Some have been saying unpleasant things. Addressing the Detroit Economic Club on Oct. 11, presidential candidate Donald Trump predicted that the “country will end up being like Detroit if (Kamala Harris is) your president. You’re going to have a mess on your hands.” Later, Trump again disparaged the city, claiming Detroit “makes us a developing nation.”Trump’s depictions of Detroit are based on outdated narratives about the city.

Protest movements can look very different depending on where you stand, both literally and figuratively. For protesters, demonstrations are usually the result of meticulous planning by advocacy groups and leaders aimed at getting a message out to a wider world or to specific institutional targets. To outside onlookers, however, protests can seem disorganized and disruptive, and it can be difficult to see the depth of the effort or their aims.
