It may be the case for those who live through any war that, for their own mental health, they need to see it as of such scale and scope that it has the capacity to bring ever-lasting peace. One of the key struggles for Israel and the Middle East as a whole is our inability, even while war is ongoing, to hold fast to that particular dream.

The world seems focussed on ceasefires and humanitarian pauses, with a passing mention of the desirability of a two-state solution. Israel’s Defence Forces meanwhile are moving through consecutive phases of a seemingly ordered campaign with clear objectives: The elimination of any future threat to Israel’s security from Hamas; and the return of the hostages taken from Israel to Gaza on October 7.

The 7 October massacre of tens of hundreds of Israeli civilians by Hamas terrorists changed everything and – not so surprisingly – nothing. It is less than a month. The bodies of lives destroyed are still being buried. More than 200 innocent people, of all ages and races, continue to be held by terrorists inside Gaza. Those responsible are being hunted down, but most are still at large.
