California homeowners whose homes were destroyed in a recent natural disaster - including the San Diego floods in January 2024 - could get some relief from a new state program launching this month. The CalAssist Mortgage Fund, run by the California Housing Finance Agency, is distributing $105 million in grants to cover up to three months of mortgage payments, totaling a maximum of $20,000, for some eligible homeowners, the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services said in a news release.

One person is dead and three others are injured after a vehicle crash in Pacific Beach on Wednesday night, officials said. The collision was reported just before 10 p.m. on Grand Avenue near Figueroa Boulevard, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. A brush fire that broke out in the Pala area was prompting evacuations on Friday, officials said. The so-called Henderson Fire - which started around 5:45 p.m. - is burning near Henderson Road and Pala Mission Road and grew to more than 180 acres by 8 p.m., according to Cal Fire. Evacuation orders and warnings have been issued for areas surrounding the flames. A temporary evacuation point is located at the Pala Casino Parking Lot at 11154 Highway 76, Pala, CA 92059.

The San Diego Humane Society took in 41 more pets after removing them from a home in Escondido on Wednesday. SDHS' Humane Law Enforcement team responded to the home after being notified that there were many animals inside. When they got there, they decided to take all the pets - 28 dogs, six puppies, four cats, two kittens and one chameleon - into their care as quickly as possible, according to SDHS spokesperson Nina Thompson.
