I have never forgotten the name of the ninth-grade P.E. teacher who announced my height as 4 feet 11 and one-half inches. I can’t, however, recall the name of the teacher who insisted I be promoted into her honors English class earlier that same school year. This contrast strikes me as not just odd, but telling.

I remember the names of just two teachers from my ninth-grade year at Mazama High School in Klamath Falls, Ore. First was Mr. Kessler. He taught biology and was considered a tough grader. The other was Ms. Houston. She taught P.E., and on the final day of my freshman year, she weighed and then measured each student. When it was my turn, I stood with my back straight against the wall as she placed her wooden clipboard atop my head.

On Tuesday night, I did something I have not done in five years: I watched an Oklahoma City Thunder playoff game. The last time I did that, Damien Lillard hit a 3-pointer from another time zone, and I thought that was just about the best thing ever. Maybe not as sweet as when the Golden State Warriors came back from a 3-1 deficit to win the Western Conference in 2016, but pretty freaking close. Lillard’s shot nuked the last incarnation of the Thunder’s Golden Era.
