I figured the Penguins were toast when they placed Jake Guentzel on injured reserve in mid-February. Kyle Dubas basically conceded as much when he dealt Guentzel to the Hurricanes three weeks later. The stretch that followed featured some of the most disturbing hockey we’ve seen during Mike Sullivan’s time as head coach. The Penguins appeared to be on the fast track to finishing the season as a lottery team.

The Penguins’ acquisition of Erik Karlsson last August was the franchise’s most exciting player transaction since trading for Phil Kessel in 2015. How could it not be? Karlsson was a coming off a 2022-23 campaign in which he did something no NHL defenseman had accomplished since 1992: record 100+ points in a season. He became just the sixth defenseman in history to do so.

At least publicly, the Penguins continue to state their intentions of righting the ship and making the postseason. That ain’t gonna happen. This is the first time since Sidney Crosby’s rookie season that the Penguins are playing meaningless regular-season games. The extent of how meaningless their final 18 games become is up to Kyle Dubas and Mike Sullivan. Those games don’t have to be entirely meaningless. This season was a massive dud. The short- and long-term future is pretty bleak.

The head coach who deployed Patric Hornqvist with fourth-line minutes in Game 6 of the 2017 Stanley Cup Final has been missing for quite some time. The Penguins haven’t won a postseason series since 2018. By no stretch of the imagination does that fall squarely on Mike Sullivan. No one’s blaming Sullivan for not winning the Stanley Cup three seasons in a row.

At the end of the day, you need superstars and elite talent to win a Stanley Cup. And the Penguins have exactly none of that in the pipeline. Until they do, I wouldn’t be the slightest bit concerned with adding complementary pieces. They are always readily available.

I beg your pardon?

Hearing from sources that the group of Ron Burkle, Mario Lemieux and David Morehouse are investigating the possibility of buying back the Penguins from Fenway Sports. Burkle and Lemieux sold the Penguins to Fenway in 2021. Fenway has been looking to sell a partial share. Will be

Dan Muse saying all the right things in his intro presser. Calm but authoritative demeanor. Feeling good about him being the guy to lead the Pens through this transition.
