But they are also the destination of the most dangerous migratory route in the world. Caminando Fronteras, which monitors migrants’ rights in Spain, reports that the route to the Canary Islands continues to be the world’s deadliest. There were 9757 deaths at sea in 2024 alone. Most of the migrants come from Mauritania, followed by Senegal.

YSR has its roots in swimming, explains Estelle Jean, the organisation’s founder and executive director. “In 2016, thousands of people were coming by the sea, especially in the northern part of the island, where the Turkish shore is only 12 km [7.5 miles] away. (Lesbos) En cercle devant la mer cristalline, à l’ombre d’une bâtisse abandonnée, chacun se présente à tour de rôle : « Je m’appelle Salah*, je viens de Syrie, je suis un bon nageur », s’exclame non sans fierté le jeune homme au physique d’athlète.
