TEMAGAMI - Property owners are being encouraged to become familiar with the guidelines provided by the FireSmart program. Temagami council received a presentation from Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) fire advisor Ken Cox recently outlining the benefits of the program. Temagami Fire Chief Jim Sanderson said in a later interview that the FireSmart guidelines are important everywhere, and not just in Temagami.

Chamberlain garden a cooperative initiative

CHAMBERLAIN TOWNSHIP - Plans for a community garden are taking form in Chamberlain Township. A cooperative initiative is being put in place this year, allowing participants to actively work in the garden, growing and being able to enjoy the plants that emerge. There are also plans for community events where there will be opportunities to taste and enjoy the produce that is being grown in the garden.

ENGLEHART - The Next Stop Englehart Quilter’s Guild held a quilting exhibition May 9 and 10 at the St. Paul’s Emmanuel United Church in Englehart. The Elbows Up Stitches In Hand Quilt Show featured 120 quilts and quilted items submitted by the members of the guild.

TEMISKAMING SHORES - The Denim and Diamonds Ladies Night Out has proudly announced that in its final year it has raised $36,650 to assist with the purchase of a new mammogram machine at the Temiskaming Hospital. Over the past years it has also directed funds to the Bikers Reunion which in turn has supported Community Cancer Care. Ladies Night Out chair Sandy Sauvé says the group has been doing fundraising for ten years but this is its last year and it is going out on a high.

ARMSTRONG TOWNSHIP - Armstrong Township council wants to ensure the public knows it supports the attendants at the township’s recreational facilities, including the pool, the gym, and the rink. The need to formalize the rules of the recreation facilities in the township was raised by chief administrative officer Dan Thibeault at council’s April 15 meeting. “We’ve been doing a lot of things informally,” he said of the rules that govern the facilities.

ENGLEHART - Englehart town staff and council are getting ready to finalize their 2025 budget, which is expected to be presented at the May 28 council meeting. A tax rate increase of two per cent, and an increase of four per cent in the water, sewer and garbage rates were given the nod of approval by council as staff prepare the budget for final approval at the May 28 meeting.
