The Royals have signed right-hander Trevor Richards to a minor league deal, according to an announcement from the Omaha Storm Chasers, Kansas City’s Triple-A affiliate. The righty has been assigned to Omaha and will give the Royals some non-roster bullpen depth. Richards, 32 next week, hasn’t been in good form lately. The Twins acquired him from the Blue Jays at last year’s deadline, sending minor league infielder Jay Harry the other way.

Red Sox designated hitter Rafael Devers spoke to members of the media Thursday, including Alex Speier of The Boston Globe. Devers said that chief baseball officer Craig Breslow recently asked him about playing first base in the wake of the Triston Casas injury. Devers said that he is unwilling to take up the position, adding that the club told him to put away his glove when they moved him from third base to designated hitter this winter. He feels that the team has now gone back on its word.

Right right-hander Hunter Greene has a grade 1 right groin strain, per Mark Sheldon of MLB.com. He has not yet been placed on the 15-day injured list but manager Terry Francona says that will happen before Greene’s turn in the rotation comes up again. There’s no strict rush to make the move, as IL stints can be backdated by as many as three days. Even if the IL move isn’t officially made for a day or two, he would be eligible to return on the same date.

Former White Sox and Tigers great Chet Lemon has passed away at the age of 70, per an obituary from Jeff Seidel of the Detroit Free Press. A specific cause of death wasn’t listed but Lemon’s ongoing health problems have been previously documented. He was diagnosed with polycythemia vera, a rare blood disorder, while still a player in 1990. The obituary notes that Lemon suffered a series of clots and at least 13 strokes over the years.

The Mets announced today that they have signed left-hander Colin Poche to a minor league deal. He will report to Triple-A Syracuse and provide the club with some non-roster lefty depth for the bullpen. Poche, 31, started the season with the Nationals on a minor league deal. He cracked the Opening Day roster but had an awful tenure as a Nat. He logged 8 2/3 innings over 13 appearances, allowing 11 earned runs, leading to an 11.42 ERA.

The Dodgers announced that right-hander Evan Phillips has been placed on the 15-day injured list due to right forearm discomfort. Fellow righty Matt Sauer has been recalled to take his spot on the active roster. The club hasn’t provided any details about Phillips, but it’s a concerning announcement. It’s always somewhat worrisome when a pitcher’s elbow/forearm are the cause of an IL stint, and it only exacerbates what has already been a challenging year for the righty.
