    I remember the evening, so many years ago, that my mother excitedly gathered us in the living room of our house behind the pool hall in Athabasca to watch a show featuring a "Cree girl," a talented singer. I don't remember what songs she sang or who accompanied her, but I do remember that my family was spellbound. The tears in mother's eyes prompted tears in my eyes, which prompted tears from my younger sisters, brother and a couple of cousins.

    When book fans anticipate what’s coming out this fall, we tend to scan book lists for perennial favourites: a thriller or the latest from a dearly held author. But with tens of thousands of books expected to be published between September and December alone, it can be difficult to figure out what we need to put on our must-read list. There’s always a big biography — this year, (1) Walter Isaacson’s eponymously titled “Elon Musk” bio (Simon & Schuster, Sept. 12) is surely the one to read.
