    Firstly, you’ll need to halve the tubes and draw a really simple hull for your boat on one of the pieces, so it’s good to have some reference photos to look at. Then cut it out, and tape extra bits of card on if you want to make the design more elaborate. When you are happy with the shape attach the bottom edge of it onto your background, leave the top part open for now. Save any leftover pieces of tube.

    1 - Push one side of the tube gently near the edge and it will begin to collapse in, this will make the two ‘ears’ stand up and the top of the head will flatten. 2 - Draw a ‘shield’ shape on the front of the tube. This will be the face shape, but from the bridge of the nose down, so you need to leave a bit of space at the top for the eyebrows and eyes. The point at the bottom of the shield shape can be right at the bottom of the tube. When you are happy with the shape, cut it out.

    Breaking down egg boxes into their component parts is a great way of ‘playing’ with shapes and works well with many natural forms, birds, plants, or maybe insects like these . . . You can even use the leftover pieces of the egg box to make a simple background, maybe some foliage like this. Here I’ve tried to use up every single piece I had left over, what I call ‘pure making’.
