The Australian industry body Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) are reporting record high lamb prices for the time of year. Their national ‘trade lamb indicator, which is a price guide for lighter carcase weight lambs is recording an average price of $10.41/kg which is the equivalent of €5.86/kg at current exchange rate. Their national ‘heavy lamb indicator’ which is a price guide for heavy carcases weighing upwards of 30kg is recording a slightly higher price of $10.49/kg or €5.90/kg.

Preventing runoff of soiled water from farm roadways to waters is a statutory requirement governed by the Good Agricultural Practice for the Protection of Watercourses. It states that from 1 January 2021, there will be no direct runoff of soiled water from farm roadways to waters. The Department of Agriculture and Food minimum specifications for farm roadways and underpasses(S.199) outline advice on constructing and maintaining roadways.

What penalties will I be subject to if I do not purchase a ram as planned in 2025? There terms and conditions state that where an applicant fails to complete the genotyped ram action in the year selected applicants will not receive payment for the genotyped ram action for the year in question and will receive a 50% penalty on their Action A payment.

The Complementary Income Support for Young Farmers (CIS-YF) is proving popular with young farmers, with payment rates rising by almost 150% compared to the previous CAP. A young trained farmer eligible for a maximum payment on 50ha is eligible to receive a payment ranging from over €7,500 to €8,450. The payment rate is set at approximately €155/ha on average with a top-up bringing the payment to almost €170/ha in 2024.

Farmers availing of a nitrates derogation and with lands located more than 30km from their main farm-holding may now have to accept a lower stocking rate limit for such lands. This follows a change in the review of the Nitrates Action Programme earlier this year. The distance from the main-farm holding is 30km ‘as the crow flies’ with the stocking rate reduced to a maximum of 170kg organic nitrogen per hectare (N/ha).
