    If there’s one takeaway from the recent forums for mayoral candidates, it’s this: Far too many Detroit residents are extremely frustrated and need to vent before they can get down to business and elect the next mayor. I’m not pushing for any candidate in this race. What I am advocating for is less yelling, and more searching for the person who will make this city better. But I understand the anger.

    It’s been months, but by no means have I forgotten the two horrific incidents last winter in metro Detroit. Neither should you, but I’ll extend you all some grace if you’ve forgotten. Our 24-hour-news cycle forces people to simply move on. And given the non-stop attacks on DEI and other moves by President Donald Trump, national stories simply have taken over most local news reports.

    It’s very rare that a high school principal would spend his spring break around his students, but that’s what Bryant Tipton did. Tipton — the principal of Pershing High School in the Detroit Public Schools Community District — spent a part of his break with his students on a tour of Historically Black College and Universities. The group of 26 students visited seven HBCU campuses by bus. For senior Dakayla Williams, the trip was a life-changing experience.

I’ve come to expect the worst, daily, when it comes to complying with the administration’s rollback on diversity, equity and inclusion. But taking Harriet Tubman off the Underground Railroad page on the National Parks Service website is enough to make my blood boil. And the excuse that it was basically an accident is about as flimsy as it comes.
