On June 4, 1989, hope for democracy lived and died. In Poland, Solidarity defeated the communist party in a peaceful election, sparking a wave of mostly peaceful revolutions across the Eastern Bloc that would quickly lead to the dissolution of the Soviet Union. But in China’s Tiananmen Square, the brutal communist government slaughtered students whose three-month-long pro-democracy protest had captured the world’s attention. I don’t know if the protests in China contributed to Poland’s revolution.

The Bezos Post reported that the National Park Service had rewritten the history of the Underground Railroad to appease the white supremacist movement MAGA crowd and their leader, Grand Wizard President Donald Trump. For years, a National Park Service webpage introduced the Underground Railroad with a large photograph of its most famous “conductor,” Harriet Tubman.

More than a few of my social studies and civics teachers throughout junior high and high school used Twilight Zone episodes to help us truly understand what so many Americans have clearly now forgotten.
