Coming off a 4-7 season and a first-round playoff exit against Pierce County, the Red Devils begin their second campaign under coach Thomas Clark, who turned 46 on Monday.

Jackson’s boys finished 16th and its girls 23rd in the Georgia High School Association state track and field championships last week in Commerce, with T.J. White turning in a third-place performance for the boys and Ariyah Burke placing third for the girls. As usual, the distance events proved to be Red Devils strengths, with White finishing third in the 3,200-meter run in 10:16.68 and eighth in the 1,600 (4:45.11). Santiago Reynolds came in 11th in the 400 in 4:52.04.

History was made Thursday at the Vatican, where the new pope was presented to adoring throngs in St. Peter’s Square. Cardinal Robert Provost became Leo XIV, the first American pontiff in the 2,000-year history of the Holy Roman Church. He becomes the 267th pope in church history after the April 21 death of Pope Francis. There had been hope, albeit faint, that the Vatican would make a different kind of history — electing the first Black pope in church history.

It was here that some qualified for the state meet and some barely missed qualifying. With Jaison McCall winning the triple jump and the 400-meter dash and strong Red Devil performances in the distance-running events, the Jackson boys track team crowned themselves champions of Region 2-AA last week. The Red Devils scored 184 points, beating Morgan County (141) and third-place Pike County (139). Rutland (86), Callaway (84) and Westside-Macon (47) rounded out the rest of the field.

Baseball season ended for the Red Devils on an extra-inning Saturday afternoon in North Georgia, when a ground ball unexpectedly scooted through the legs of an infielder trying to field it. Ringgold rallied for four runs in the bottoms of the final two innings and beat the Red Devils 5-4 in eight, advancing to the second round of the Class AA playoffs when it looked like Jackson would get there instead. “I couldn’t be more proud of them and I told them that,” Jackson coach Ryan Duffey said.
