It was truly a dark and stormy night in the Rockbridge area Monday, complete with strong winds, lightning and hail – and a house fire that involved nearly every fire company in the county. Severe storms rolled in from the west as darkness approached Monday with winds that knocked down trees and branches throughout the area. Firefighters would eventually respond to 23 calls for trees down in roadways through several rounds of storms overnight.

Rockbridge County Sheriff Steve Funkhouser has announced that he will be retiring Jan. 1. “After 29 years with the Sheriff’s Office, I have decided to move on to other things and enjoy more time with my family,” he said this week. “I appreciate my time with the Sheriff’s Office and the support I’ve enjoyed from the community and my family. I am thankful for the opportunities provided to me from Sheriffs Day and Blalock.

Traffic was backed up once again in the northern part of Rockbridge County following a tractor-trailer accident Sunday afternoon that injured its driver. According to Nathan Ramsey, Rockbridge County fire-rescue chief, the accident occurred at mile marker 197 southbound on Interstate 81 at approximately 5:15 p.m.The accident involved a single tractor-trailer that was lying on its side across the interstate when first responders arrived.

Three Injured In Morning CrashOne person was critically injured and two others suffered minor injuries in a multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 81 between the Timber Ridge and Fairfield exits last Wednesday morning. The wreck closed down the northbound lanes of the interstate and produced a massive backup on U.S. 11 for hours and affected other local roads as well.
