The Nintendo Switch 2 launches in under a month, and although I've pre-ordered the console, two GameCube controllers, and Street Fighter 6, there's another purchase I have my eye on to complete my setup: a portable monitor. I'd be lying if I said I was a recent handheld console convert. In truth, I've always been one, ever since my grandparents gifted me a Nintendo Game Boy in 1995.

Valve's Steam Deck has redefined what a PC gaming handheld is and what the category can be capable of. Since launching in 2022, it's become another success for Valve, with a semi-successor model, the Steam Deck OLED, launching in 2023. However, it's also been working on improving SteamOS, the software powering the handheld, and it's just brought out a beta update that could help extend the battery life of millions of Steam Decks worldwide.

According to Nintendo's latest financial report, which ends in March 2026, the company expects the Nintendo Switch 2, out on June 5, to sell 15 million consoles by the end of the financial year. If the Japanese gaming giant achieves this, which is looking all but certain at this point, that would beat the original Switch's 14 million first-year sales. Nintendo also stated in the report that it expects to sell 4.5 million original Switch consoles in the same financial year.
