The trip was a tradition that stretched back generations. It was common in the “good ol’ days” for decisions about promotions and appointments to be hashed out by some of the leadership while shooting quail or reeling in redfish.

The good Samaritans at Southdowns Lounge managed to break up the one-sided beatdown in the parking lot. The victim stumbled to his car and drove off, never to resurface or be named in any official records. But it wasn’t over. The men involved in the attack had moved to the nearby Sonic Drive-In that shared a parking lot with Southdowns when Round 2 played out. “That’s me,” a man looking over a police report on the encounter said decades later.

On the early morning of March 9, 2003, in the parking lot of the now-shuttered Southdowns Lounge just after last call, those words had to do with someone’s “momma.”One man had suggested that the occupation of another man’s mother involved exchanging money for sexual services.

Raheem Howard, 21, his wrists cuffed behind him and his ankles shackled, shuffled along between two BRPD officers as they made their way in the traditional “perp walk” to a patrol car.
