So-called “wealth preservation” investment trusts are often judged on their ability to shield shareholders from periods of equity volatility, and have done well on this front as of late. Personal Assets (PNL) and Ruffer (RICA) shares made modest gains in April, a month that saw the MSCI World index lose almost 3 per cent in sterling terms, while Capital Gearing (CGT) was down by a meagre 0.1 per cent. All three of these trusts are also sitting on gains for 2025 so far.

Even those who don’t like active funds can still use their top picks as inspiration – and that’s especially useful in the somewhat under-researched world of UK small-caps. That’s why we’ve broken out managers’ top picks in the past, both via our regular Ideas Farm segment and an analysis carried out by my colleague Dan Jones last year (‘Professionals’ favourite small-cap picks’). Both of these look at the most popular holdings for a selection of top-performing UK small-cap portfolios.

A star of the emerging markets in recent years, India has had a rougher ride so far in 2025. Tariff concerns, fears of high valuations and tensions with Pakistan have all combined to knock the country’s stock market off course. The MSCI India index is down by around 2 per cent for 2025 in the year to date in sterling terms, putting it behind China, Japan, Asia, the UK and Europe.

Few investors are quoted quite so liberally as Warren Buffett, whose decision to step back marks the end of an era for both Berkshire Hathaway and perhaps stockpicking in general. But if it’s easy to repeat his asides, replicating his returns has proved much trickier. That much is obvious from the UK funds space, where some managers have openly sought to adopt Buffett’s investing style and others have been lauded as some sort of British heir to the man.
