A look at the big beasts of the S&P 500 gives a pretty clear impression of how a tech fund might have fared so far this year. All the Magnificent Seven stocks are down year to date for 2025 as at 28 April, ranging from a 6 per cent loss (in US dollar terms) for Meta (US:META) to falls of 16 per cent for Apple (US:AAPL), 19 per cent for Nvidia (US:NVDA) and 29 per cent for Tesla (US:TSLA). Anyone who has loaded up on such stocks is in for some pain, at least in the short term.

Retail investors have used the market volatility of the past month to buy stocks on the cheap, putting them at odds with more cautious professionals. Hargreaves Lansdown, Interactive Investor and AJ Bell all pointed to heightened levels of activity from their customers in April, with many seemingly buying during the tariff-induced sell-off. While this will relate partly to the tax year-end, platforms nevertheless saw plenty of activity seemingly related to the sell-off.

The recent turmoil in markets has driven dividend yields on infrastructure investment trusts to elevated levels, but there are still plenty of issues for these portfolios to contend with. The average share price dividend yield for trusts in the Association of Investment Companies Infrastructure sector stood at almost 7 per cent on 11 April, Stifel analysts have noted, not far off a high previously hit in October 2023.
