Owain Johns is the new chief executive of the British Microlight Aircraft Association (BMAA). Owain is a keen pilot of a P&M QuikR flexwing microlight and was the organiser of the World Microlight Championships when the event came to the UK in 2024. He was chosen from ‘a tough field of 50 applicants for the job’, said the BMAA. Eight of those were shortlisted, five were interviewed, and the final choice came down to two very strong candidates.

The long and difficult-to-follow process of modernising the UK’s airspace appears to be coming out of the ‘talking about it’ phase into a ‘taking action’ phase… we think. Just announced by the CAA is a ‘step change’ with a new UK Airspace Design Service (UKADS) backed by a new Airspace Design Support Fund.

Flying at Dubai’s Emirates Flight Training Academy just got a whole lot more fun with the addition of two Gamebird GB1 aerobatic aircraft to the already impressive fleet. The two-seat Gamebirds join the 30-strong fleet of Cirrus, Embraer Phenom and Diamond aircraft meaning EFTA is now training cadets on four distinct aircraft types before they graduate. The new Gamebirds are the academy’s first aerobatic aircraft specially designed for upset prevention and recovery training (UPRT).

Seventy-four pilots – the Class of 2025 – graduated from Leading Edge Aviation at a ceremony held beneath the wings of Concorde at Aerospace Bristol recently. The evening celebrated the achievement, ambition, and aviation excellence of the graduates, who took centre stage. Among the nearly 300 guests were family, friends, instructors, and industry leaders, including representatives from TUI, British Airways, Jet2.com, Wizz Air, Titan Airways, Aurigny and Loganair.

+VIDEO Vertical Aerospace says it has made European aviation history with the first-ever piloted wingborne flight of a winged electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft in open airspace. The flight of the VX4 prototype, piloted by Chief Test Pilot Si Davies, saw the aircraft take-off, fly and land like a conventional aircraft, with lift generated by the wing.
