Manteca won’t be allowing any more smoke shops within the city for the foreseeable future. The City Council instituted an emergency ban Tuesday for “health and safety reasons” while the staff looks at ways of better regulating smoke shops. This is not the first time city leaders have tried to put additional restrictions on smoke shops. The opening of a smoke shop the 100 block of West Yosemite in the spring of 2021 irked some other merchants.

In a showdown for first place in Valley Oak League boys volleyball Monday night, visiting Mountain House avenged its earlier-season, five-set loss to Manteca with a 25-22, 25-18, 25-23 sweep of the host Buffaloes to knot the VOL race with three matches remaining. The first set had three ties and two lead changes down the stretch with four ties and two lead changes down the stretch in the third set, and the Mustangs (10-1, 20-4) just overpowered Manteca (8-1, 18-7) at the end.

Lathrop’s eight-match home winning streak came to a screeching halt Wednesday night, as visiting Beyer swept the Spartans 25-22, 25-20, 25-15 in a battle for first place in Western Athletic Conference boys volleyball. The Patriots entered the contest tied for first place with Livingston. The Manteca boys boasted four individual event winners Saturday for the most points in the Inaugural Dave Soeth MUSD Backyard Bash, and when combined with the Manteca girls, the Buffaloes claimed the championship trophy at Dino Cunial Stadium. The Manteca boys tallied 116 points, East Union finished second (79), Lathrop third (71), Sierra fourth (56) and Weston Ranch fifth (28).
