After the Seattle Sounders' 2-2 draw against Charlotte FC back on Matchday 2, a talking point quickly emerged: "Here we go again with the same old Seattle Sounders". In 2024, dropped points at home were an all too common sight, so the sentiment wasn't unexpected. But I also didn't think it was accurate. Seattle's performance in attack that night was much better than anything we saw in the doldrums of 2024.

Nicolás Lodeiro is without a doubt a Seattle Sounders legend. The Eternal Circle of Legends was made for a player who lifted three massive trophies with the club, whose individual efforts were recognized with a Newcomer of the Year, two CCL Best XIs, an MLS Best XI, an All Star appearance and an MVP finalist. He's also the fourth greatest goalscorer in club history, the assist leader and three-time Sounder at Heart Offensive Player of the Year.

It’s amazing how fast the vibes can change in this league. A season that began with so much promise for the Seattle Sounders suddenly feels like it’s already on the ropes. The CCC dreams have been dashed in unceremonious fashion. The injury situation is brutal. The result in Matchday 4 did little to boost morale, as the Sounders took a frustrating 1-0 defeat at St. Louis City.

Four times finishing second in the West and 86 wins prior to 2025. Seattle and LA are the class of the West. Both have only missed the playoffs once in these six short years of dominance.

There’s no good way to prepare for the lower oxygen environments of high elevations. It’s an advantage for home teams in Utah, Colorado, Antigua, Mexico City and elsewhere that’s much different than having a vibrant crowd or single-digit cold or triple-digit heat. Now, it’s quite unlikely that the Seattle Sounders will actually get altitude sickness – they’re professional athletes, not homebodies like the author.

There’s no turning back. Seattle Sounders season is here, and I’m also here to take the reins on this Monday column from the great Dave Clark. My debut couldn’t be arriving at a much more exciting time. Concacaf Champions Cup is underway, and the Sounders are ahead 3-1 after Leg 1 of their Round One series. Saturday’s 2-2 draw vs. Charlotte FC might have had a disappointing ending, but it still offered a glimpse of the type of team this can be if they can play up to their potential.
