The German’s attitude towards sniping was much like the American’s and British prior to World War II, largely ignoring the role. During World War I, the Germans employed scoped Gewehr 98 (G98) rifles effectively in the trenches of France. However, prior to World War II, the Wehrmacht abandoned sniping.

Since the first rounds of copper-cased fixed ammunition began to appear around the time of the Civil War, there has been a constant push for more powerful cartridges and repeating rifles to fire them. The Sharps rifles chambered some very powerful cartridges for the time, but those were single-shot. The 1860 Henry was the first reliable repeating rifle, but it chambered the rather puny rimfire .44 Henry round.

I also discussed equipment and hunter limitations, and considerations for what distance you and your equipment are capable of for taking different size game. I described entry-level rifles and appropriate cartridges, as well as starter scopes, appropriate bullet choices and ammunition.

Many of us have probably seen shows featuring hunters shooting game at long distance. It’s impressive, and enough of us have thought “I’d like to do that!” that the current shooting sports rage is long range competitions and hunting. However, let’s discuss the ethics as it relates to hunting, as well as the ins and outs of long-range hunting, and what’s required.
