While much of the western U.S. will feel record-breaking heat over the weekend, a big change to the weather pattern is expected as we head into next week. As this transition occurs, Montana will see rounds of thunderstorms, with some severe potential. With temperatures pushing 90°F across Big Sky Country, sufficient instability will be available for thunderstorms to develop and strengthen. These storms could organize underneath strong upper-level winds.

We've had a little break across Texas from active weather, but it will quickly come to an end as we see the next upper-level system emerge from the west. While the upper low moves closer, surface low pressure will deepen, bringing in plenty of moisture from the Gulf. As this occurs, instability will grow each afternoon as temperatures warm. As these ingredients come together, severe thunderstorms are expected to erupt, with all hazards possible.

A strengthening storm system from the Northwest will move across the Northern Plains, Great Lakes, and Northeast over the next few days. Although it will be a mix of rain and snow for many, impactful accumulations of snow will be possible. According to our latest data, areas favored for significant snow include the Arrowhead of Minnesota, the UP of Michigan, and northern New England. Totals over 6" will be possible in these locations through Wednesday morning.

While much of the Southwest has been baking under record-breaking heat the last few days, an upcoming shift in the upper-level pattern will bring big changes through next week, including cooler temperatures and increasing precipitation chances. Much of the country will also see changes, including snow and potentially severe thunderstorms. The first sign of changes will be an increasing chance of rain showers across the Four Corners region.

Cities along the Rio Grande will especially feel the heat, as temperatures soar well into the 90s for Laredo and McAllen. These temperatures will have the chance to break records through Saturday.
