The TV was the first thing I noticed when I walked into a restaurant in Montreal’s West End. “CANADIAN BUSINESSES PULL U.S.-MADE PRODUCTS IN RESPONSE TO TARIFFS,” the screen read, under another all-caps caption, “TRADE WHIPLASH.”On that day in early March, the person defending the Canadian government’s position on CNN was my member of parliament, Anthony Housefather. I said hello to the woman behind the cash. She was lamenting Housefather, saying she no longer believed in him.

Last week, it was discovered that an article about Jackie Robinson—the civil rights pioneer who broke Major League Baseball’s color barrier in 1947—was removed from the U.S. Department of Defense website as part of the Trump Administration’s purge of materials deemed related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). After a twenty-four-hour groundswell of criticism from the media and the public, the Pentagon then restored the article to their website.

My uncle Max died last week. He was sick, quite sick. We spent October 30 at the ICU, held his hand, told him he was loved, and watched helplessly as his breathing got more and more laboured. The immediate family arrived from near and far, and over the next 12 hours or so everyone got to say their sad goodbyes. Outside of his ICU room there was a poster for a Halloween costume contest being held the next day on the floor. The sign said there would be prizes for the top three costumes.

Home »Jazz Articles » In Pictures » Tony Malaby and Firebath Ignite the Jazz Gallery I had the great pleasure of seeing Tony Malaby perform at The Jazz Gallery. Malaby moved to Boston a couple of years ago to take up a teaching position at Berklee. Although he continues to perform in New York City, I had not seen him live since he moved. On this occasion, his band presented the "Firebath" suite based around three simple melodies.

There was a counter-protest organized, and the rally cry I saw gave me pause.

The healthiest way to think about it for me is having a foot in the past, a foot in the present, andmy mind in the future. That's the only way I feel like I can navigate this thing without goingcompletely crazy. I feel like I've put enough hours on the horn to know that what I'm doingsounds nothing like Coltrane or Albert Ayler.

She said, “You’re going to miss meWait and you’ll see” – The Tragically Hip, “Fully Completely”It’s been almost eight years since I stood in an arena full of Tragically Hip fans, singing my heart out. On August 20, 2016, nearly 12 million Canadians, almost one-third of the country, watched the final Tragically Hip concert live. People packed bars, threw house parties, watched at community centres, churches, and social clubs.
