When, a while back, troubling news emerged from Thixendale that legendary landlord of The Cross Keys Steve Anstey was planning to act on his oft-repeated warning and finally retire. There was much wailing and gnashing of teeth amongst those of us who have long been fans of his 35-year plus tenure at his entirely marvellous boozer.

Dave Lee wanted to be impressed by newly-opened Indian restaurant Ruthvika in North Ferriby – but found this attractive-looking fresh arrival failed to fire on all cylinders. There’s money in North Ferriby. One of the West Hull villages where the cosmopolitan East Yorkshire well-off abide, it’s the place where the footballers and executives and doctors and people who understand the stock market call home.

I hate carveries. I know some people like them (and, for a fact, pubs do) but they always seem to me the worst Sunday dinner option. Meat and Yorkshires and roast tatties sat on or under just enough heat to keep them barely warm, offered up with veg left stewing in a slosh of their own tepid juices. Carveries may make life easy for chefs and kitchen staff but I don’t see why punters consider them acceptable. The illusion of bigger portions aside, you’re paying for the second best of everything.

Petros and the Cross Keys, Nafferton: The unusual Yorkshire pub and restaurant combo with 'oddly appealing' menuDave Lee samples an oddly appealing menu at Petros and the Cross Keys, Nafferton, an unusual combination of restaurant and pub – and would welcome even more of a Greek accent on the menu. Sometimes I happen upon places so delightfully odd I’m reminded that Yorkshire is big enough to provide a constant flow of surprises. Nafferton, for instance, rarely enters my consciousness.

The increase of chain eateries, though, has seen its historic streets become a little more homogenised and unappealing to the serious foodie. Whether as a consequence or a coincidence, the town’s pubs seem to be in stasis. Interesting to report, then, that a new type of booze-based venture has opened up. Bar Seven93 is a small, two-room attic space above a related bottle shop that serves eight handpulls as well as the best of the stock from the shelves a floor below.

My only real criticism of micropubs is that so few of them offer food. They all do crisps and nuts but I always insist that a pub’s not a proper pub without a pork pie or a curled up cheese sandwich under a cloche on the bar top. A delight it was then to walk into the Three B’s (their apostrophe) in Brid. For there, on a chalk board was the food special of the day – pie and peas. Thanks to a microwave and a bit of effort, punters are able to enjoy a simple but classic dish to go with their pint.

How nice it is, then, that the spirit of Whalebone appears to have drifted across the river Hull to the almost symmetrically-located Ship Inn on Hodgson Street. It's important to note that The Ship is on Hodgson Street as there are understandably several pubs called The Ship in Hull. This one is the little one tucked away in an industrial estate off Cleveland Street.
