AOR, or ‘Album/Adult Orientated Rock’ to use its disputed full titles, is also known as melodic or soft rock, even hair metal, and has developed several spin-off strands. Arguably the greatest AOR group of them all were (and still are) Journey, who said goodbye to their jazz-rock roots to seduce the North American airwaves with a peerless combination of lighter-waving ballads and raunch during the 1970s.

In 1987, guitarist Dave ‘Snake’ Sabo, bassist Rachel Bolan and drummer Rob Affuso waited anxiously in the kitchen of the New Jersey house owned by the Sabo family. Guitarist Scotti Hill had been sent to the airport to meet an important arrival. Also soaking up the atmosphere of expectation was Sabo’s mum, affectionately known to all as Mrs Snake. There was an acute awareness that the guy whose arrival they so nervously anticipated had to be the one.

Known for a sultry fusion of blues, country, rock and folk, Bonnie Raitt has been releasing albums since 1971. Almost two decades later, her career went stellar with the multi-platinum album Nick Of Time. Its follow-up, 1991’s Luck Of The Draw, included the über ballad I Can’t Make You Love Me, later covered by George Michael, Adele and many more. Below, the Californian-born singer, guitarist and political activist previews her upcoming European tour.

Ended the day with a charming Zoom call to Bonnie Raitt. With her camera switched off, I assumed we were doing 'audio-only'. At the end, Bonnie remarked how nice it was to see my smiling face. I was mortified… I had been trimming my split ends. Thank God I didn’t pick my nose!

Among the biggest thrills of my career was meeting and interviewing Steve Hillage on several occasions. Here's one from back in 2007, and yes, his man cave really *was* like Doc Brown's workshop in Back To The Future. https://t.co/JeOagAVHvA

It's unfathomable to consider that Bon Scott died *forty-five* years ago today. 📷 I was too young to have met the great man, sadly, though I was privileged to see him sing onstage - just once. Maybe the best three quid I ever spent (with The Pirates as support). https://t.co/K5HRUldFet
